PEW Research Center has recently conducted a research on the demographics and population of religious groups inhabiting in America. The study found out that Muslims are the fastest to grow and they will replace Jews as the second largest minority by 2040.
PEW has projected that by 2050, the Muslim population will reach to 8.1 million, that is the 2.1 percent of the total American population. This would double the representation of Muslim as compared to today’s 1.1 percent.
It noted that this rapid increase is due to comparatively higher birth rates and continuous migration of Muslims into America from all over the world. Another reason to contribute is that Muslims are less likely to marry outside of faith. An estimated 13% of Muslims have non-Muslim spouses as compared to 36% of Jews having non-Jewish spouses.
According to the another report released earlier by PEW, “having an increasing number of people from many different races, ethnic groups and nationalities is a positive for the U.S.”
However, hate crimes against Muslims continue to grow. In 2016, 307 incidents were reported — that is a 19% increase from the last year.
There is not much to predict at this moment, but with the rising numbers of the faithful, the influence of Islam in the U.S. is definitely going to surge. The same will attract more and more people to embrace the religion and the pace of conversion to Islam will also speed up.
